High Seas to Heirloom —
made at sea is an international waters-based studio creating signature and bespoke jewellery in gold and silver, set with carefully selected stones and enriched with thoughtful detailing.
each piece is as captivating and diverse as the destination it was inspired by, and created in.
timeless treasures that each hold a unique story of the world.
every piece carries the longitude and latitude of the place it was created, or the culture and people who inspired it.
The story
made at sea started in 2009 when Lou Dews decided to follow her life calling as a jewellery designer, and earth explorer with her artist husband.
studying in Sydney, Australia, Lou has for the past nine years lived, worked, and sailed the world aboard her yacht - a lifestyle that continues to inspire her creativity and sense of adventure.
their mantra: ‘everyday is an opportunity to discover the unknown’.
Lou draws inspiration from a life spent travelling and living in some of the world’s most captivating and diverse destinations. these ongoing experiences - now by sail - shape her work, with each piece created to tell its own story born of curiosity and exploration.
The materials
crafted in high carats of gold and silver, each piece sits effortlessly between the classical and the contemporary - timeless in spirit, precise in execution.
signature and bespoke works often feature rare, character-filled gemstones - both precious and semi-precious - sourced from around the world. Lou is continually inspired by nature’s quiet brilliance: stones alive with depth, movement, and flashes of almost otherworldly colour.
every detail is thoughtfully considered. each creation carries a subtle sense of where its materials began, resulting in jewellery that feels storied, distinctive, and quietly refined.
Sourcing & ethics
at made at sea, beauty and responsibility are inseparable.
gemstones are sourced in small quantities through trusted global partners, selected for both the character of their stones and their respect for land, labour, and local communities. preference is given to traceable materials and low-impact practices.
precious metals are chosen with equal care, with a focus on longevity, recyclability, and mindful production. pieces are created in limited numbers or as bespoke commissions, encouraging a slower, more considered approach to adornment.
jewellery made with awareness - of origin, impact, and the hands and landscapes behind each material.
